TOMS RIVER, NJ-In a holiday tradition of their own, over 100 residents and family members gathered for the annual Thanksgiving Banquet at Holiday Care Center nursing home in Toms River. The dining room was transformed into an elegant banquet hall for the occasion, complete with linen tablecloths and a warm candlelight atmosphere.

Residents and their guests were treated to a lavish buffet dinner. In addition to traditional Thanksgiving fare of roasted turkey with all the trimmings, ham and other delicious foods were available. The “harvest table,” with its mouth-watering selection of holiday nuts, pies and desserts drew a crowd as always. Of course, special dietary needs are always accommodated for the residents.

No detail was overlooked-from the soft live piano music that accompanies the event to the classic attire for the day’s chefs.

“It’s become one of our most popular events. I’m not sure who enjoys it most-the residents, their guests or the staff!” explains Dottie Brennen, activities director at Holiday Care Center. She continued, “We chose to have the celebration the week before Thanksgiving to make it easier on the families of the residents. On Thanksgiving Day, they often have several places to visit and things can get rushed. This way, we always have a full house and things are more relaxed. Family members usually aren’t in a hurry and can spend more time. This is our seventh year and each one has gotten more elaborate than the year before.”

The festivities began with a short prayer service, during which Ms. Brennen read an excerpt from an Ann Landers column originally printed on Thanksgiving Day in 1995.
